1. Call Us

(704) 396 5454

Let's spend a few minutes getting to know you and/or your child.  We will listen to your concerns and answer any questions you have about therapy and our practice.  We will set up a time to conduct a screening which usually lasts about 30 minutes and can be done by phone, virtually, or in person.

2. Evaluation

If your screening indicates further testing is necessary we will schedule an evaluation which is an in depth analysis to determine if a deficit is present and to develop a plan for therapy.  An evaluation may take up to 2 hours or may be split into 2 appointments.  After a completed evaluation you will receive a summary report and discuss a plan for therapy that will include goals and expected outcomes.

3. Begin Therapy

After you discuss the evaluation summary and agree upon recommendations from your therapist you are ready to begin life-changing therapy.  Therapy is typically scheduled 1 to 2 times per week for up to 1 hour as recommended by your therapist. Why partner with Good Shepherd Therapy?

Good Shepherd Therapy, PLLC is a private speech therapy practice specializing in early childhood speech and language development. We are partnering with preschools in North Carolina and South Carolina to help children reach their full potential by providing the highest quality therapy in the most convenient and effective environment – your school!

Good Shepherd Therapy can provide screenings, evaluations, and therapy sessions without the need for a pediatrician referral and reach those who are not eligible for early intervention services.

Common Questions

“We refer children with delays to their pediatrician. Why do we need Good Shepherd Therapy?”

It is common for parents and teachers alike to refer children with noticeable delays and disorders to their pediatricians. A report from the Commonwealth Fund, “Using Community Care Networks to Improve the Delivery of Childhood Developmental Screening and Referral to Early Intervention Services” (commonwealthfund.org) states that many health care providers who have frequent contact with children under age 5 during well-child visits are unaware of service groups that help children with developmental disabilities and delays. The report also states that if a parent misunderstands the nature of a referral or has trouble making appointments, valuable time for treatment is lost.

"What about Early Intervention Services?"

To qualify for the North Carolina Infant-Toddler program, a child must be under the age of 3 and be 25% behind in two developmental domains, 30% behind in one developmental domain or have a diagnosed physical or mental condition with a high probability of resulting in a developmental delay. (beearly.nc.gov) Eligibility for these services does not automatically transfer to eligibility for preschool special education services at age 3 and up. So, what about all of those who do not meet these criteria but still need improvement? The answer is in Good Shepherd Therapy's approach.

"What is Good Shepherd Therapy’s approach?"

We partner with preschools to provide an efficient solution to families and their children. We offer developmental screenings performed at your school with parental consent to determine if further testing is necessary. A screening is a brief look at a child’s development in speech, language, and feeding abilities.

If a screening indicates further testing is necessary, we schedule an evaluation at the parent’s location of choice, preferably at your school. An evaluation is an in-depth analysis to determine if a delay or disorder is present and to develop a plan for therapy. Therapy is typically scheduled at school 1 to 2 times per week, usually for 30 minutes, at a time, and in a designated area convenient to your curriculum and facility.

We would love the opportunity to provide more details on partnering with your school to help your children reach their full potential!

Services

A screening is your starting point.  It is a brief look at the patient’s speech, language, feeding or swallowing abilities. For children a screening includes a consultation with a parent or guardian. This is not a diagnosis of a deficit, but is a tool used to determine if further testing is necessary. We discuss patient needs and plan for additional services.

An evaluation is an in-depth assessment of communication skills and is needed to develop a plan for therapy. The goal of an evaluation is to determine if a deficit is present, and if there is, identify the type and severity of the deficit as well as provide a prognosis and recommendations for treatment. A complete case history is gathered and an evaluation of sound production, receptive and expressive language, fluency, voice and oral motor skills is completed.

Therapy provides life-changing treatment, support, and care for children and adults who have difficulties with language, cognition, communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.  We utilize the most current methods of therapy and evidence-based treatment based on the latest developments and research.
